Unleashing Student Writing through Wordless Picture Books

Log in to save this to your schedule and see who's attending!

Are you tired of grading papers? Reading less than stellar adolescent writing samples? Come experience how the use of wordless picture books in a writer's workshop can pull creative, sophisticated, and even surprising writing from your students, especially when they are given an authentic audience to share their works of art.
Too often in our middle school classrooms the instruction in literature is separated from instruction in writing. Students are asked to complete writing products without the appropriate mentors (authors) or scaffolds. When the reciprocity between reading and writing are severed, writing can become formulaic or an exercise in assignment completion. When teachers create conditions for in depth units of study within the workshop model, students build community, consider author’s choices, and find out who they are as readers, writers, speakers, collaborators, and thinkers.
